Active & Healthy Aging Workshops for Adults 50+

Workshops promoting active and healthy living throughout life

One of Ballet Austin's core values is to encourage lifelong health and well-being. We strive to provide opportunities for adults of all ages to remain active and healthy through every stage of life.

Aging begins at birth, and being active makes us feel more energetic at any time in our lives, but there are other more specific benefits to being active as we grow older. In fact, as we grow older, being physically active on a regular basis is one of the healthiest things we can do for ourselves to promote optimum quality of life.

Some specific benefits of being active as we age:

  • Strengthening muscles and bones reducing the risk fractures and even falls
  • Promoting better balance, reducing the risk of falls
  • Maintaining range of motion to remain as independent as possible into the later years
  • Maintaining healthy weight
  • Healthy lungs and heart
  • More energy and better sleep
  • Emotional, intellectual, and social benefits

Ballet Austin has developed a series of classes and workshops for men and women in their 50's and beyond to promote an active and healthy life. Two specific workshops, generously underwritten by Health’s Angels, a program of St. David’s Foundation Community Fund, include Better Balance & Movement, a falls prevention workshop, and Osteo-Strong, a workshop promoting bone health and reducing the effects of osteoporosis. Better Balance & Movement Workshop

OFFERED AT NO COST
According to the CDC, every second of every day in the United States an older adult falls, making falls the number one cause of injuries and deaths from injury among older Americans.

We also know that our sense of balance starts to decline at about age 45.

But you don’t have to fall!

Beginning a balance program before getting to the point of a fall is essential in maintaining and promoting good balance and quality of life.

Balance activities, balance exercises, and ongoing balance training can limit the loss or actually improve our performance.

This workshop will focus on promoting and maintaining balance, coordination, and posture through a series of simple brain and muscle exercises. The goal of ongoing balance training is to teach your brain how to quickly activate the right muscles in your body at the right time to help keep you upright.

This workshop is excellent for people of all ages, but especially beneficial to the older adult or those dealing with the affects of neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. It can also be helpful for individuals recovering from injury, experiencing declining vision, hearing and muscle strength.

Like anything else in life good balance is about practice. We tend to get good at sitting due to practice, so get out of the chair and let's balance our lives for healthier aging!

Everyone welcome! Family members and caregivers are welcome to attend as well.

Held at Ballet Austin, 501 W. 3rd St. Call 512.501.8704 if you have questions.
