Learn a short dance phrase set to the song "Rise and Shine Conga Line" by Joe Scruggs from Ballet Austin's "Not Afraid of the Dark– The Show That Glows!®"

Curricular Connections: Fine Arts and Physical Education

These dance lessons are available anytime, and can be offered to students before or after they experience the performance.

The short dance phrase is set to the music from “Rise and Shine Conga Line” by Joe Scruggs, featured in Ballet Austin’s Not Afraid of the Dark– The Show That Glows!®, which was choreographed by Stephen Mills. The movements are inspired by the choreography from this number in the ballet, and by Conga dance.

The Conga dance is a social dance, meaning it is the type of dance you would do with a group of people for fun at a social gathering rather than to be performed on a stage. It is traditionally performed in a group, with dancers forming a line and following a leader in a circular motion around the dance floor, dancing to the rhythm of the music.

Originally, Conga is an Afro-Cuban dance, meaning there are both African and Cuban influences to the dance. The original version of the dance is believed to have been brought over to the West Indies (near the Caribbean) by African slaves. Later, the dance grew to become a popular street dance in Cuba. Since it is a line-shaped dance, a Conga line represents unity or togetherness.
