2020-21 Season

Welcome!

This season marks my 20th year working with the exceptionally talented dancers and staff of Ballet Austin. It has been an honor serving our community for the past two decades, and I appreciate the trust you have placed in me to explore, expand, and celebrate the art of ballet. The start of this new decade offers us space to reflect on its unprecedented beginning and the encouragement to move forward.

I am excited to share with you a fantastic slate of performances. The season starts with my new production, JOY / 3 HAPPY DANCES, bringing us back together after a time of necessary separation. Through timeless classics like THE NUTCRACKER and SWAN LAKE, we delve into mesmerizing stories that foster unparalleled performances worth revisiting year after year, decade after decade. Invigorated with a new take on agency through a shifted perspective, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW explores individual growth through comedy and a deep connection with another. In THERE IS NO OTHER, I present an unflinching portrait of the power of language, the immense damage it can cause, and the incredible opportunity we have as people to reclaim the medium to help others and celebrate the humanity we all share.

We have the power to make this decade one that will impact the course of history for the better. and I invite all of you to join us on this journey of reflection, introspection, and celebration.

See you in the audience!

Pink Confetti Dance

JOY / 3 HAPPY DANCES BY STEPHEN MILLS
SEPT. 25-27 | THE LONG CENTER

Experience the JOY of dance as we return to the theater for a new season! While life can bring us challenges, it’s also filled with laughter, community, and JOY!  Our season-opening production is a celebration of this happy reunion, featuring three brand new works by Artistic Director/Choreographer Stephen Mills.

PINK CONFETTI DANCE bubbles with exuberance as dancers frolic to musical selections by Johann Sebastian Bach while choreographing “mountains” of confetti into moving works of art. This light-hearted romp will have you smiling ear to ear!  In COUNTERPOINT, dancers flow through cascading movement canons from composer Steve Reich’s pulsing harmonies. The score, Electric Counterpoint, is Reich’s critically-acclaimed musical triptych for guitars. This energy-packed program also features a new contemporary ballet by Mills with music by Franz Schubert that explores the unique times we’re living in and the wonderful escape dance brings to anyone who experiences it.

Join us as we joyfully celebrate coming back together after spending time apart!
