Assembling a new season of dance works for you is something I enjoy, and I’m excited about the productions in our 2018/19 season. As artistic director and a producing choreographer, I have the dual honor of working with dancers, composers, musicians, costumers, and set and lighting designers to create original ballets and contemporary dance productions unique to Ballet Austin. As a curator, I also connect with acclaimed choreographers working at the highest levels of our field and invite them to work with us so you can sample the many flavors in the diverse menu that is American dance today.
While building our 2018/19 lineup, I realized my selections had a common thread: women of strength. I’m surrounded by strong women—from the dancers who interpret my steps, to the collaborators who design and execute my vision, to the patrons, donors, educators, community leaders, and team of professionals at Ballet Austin that support our mission. The arts world is filled with exceptional women, participating in every capacity you can imagine. History does not fully reflect the value of the time and talent they’ve invested in these endeavors, and this season we’re celebrating our FEMMES DE FORCE and the many ways they bring life to art.
Highlights include a new world-premiere work, inspired by the visual art of Natalie Frank; a production dedicated to the works of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, one of the most-successful choreographers working today; and a diverse array of classical and contemporary productions showcasing incredible female artists and iconic female characters with powerful lessons for us all.
I hope you’re looking forward to our 2018/19 season and to joining us in the audience!
