2026/27 PRODUCTIONS
As I began to select the works to share with you this coming season, I found myself thinking about time. Time feels increasingly rare, with days filled with urgency. It’s easy to find our attention perpetually focused on the next task. Dance asks something different of us. It asks us to pause…and be present. This season is an invitation to do just that—to take time to spend together.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is among the most playful ballets I’ve created, based on Shakespeare’s comedy, set in a moonlit world of mischievous fairies, confused lovers, and spells that unravel in the most amusing ways. Taking time for laughter is not a luxury; it is essential.
The Nutcracker offers a reminder each December that time gathers meaning; children who once watched in wonder now return with families of their own….in many cases with multiple generations taking time from their busy holidays to share in the magic of this enduring ballet.
In February I’m pleased to share with you an Austin premiere by Tony Award winning choreographer, Justin Peck, entitled Partita. This exciting work created for the New York City Ballet moves with athletic clarity and momentum to the Pulitzer Prize winning composition by Caroline Shaw. Alongside it, my work CARBON53, is set to the hypnotic music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. On Valentine’s weekend, our time together offers dynamic energy.
Roses for the Last Dance in March becomes a time to reflect. From the intimate pas de deux, One / the body’s grace, to Smuin Ballet Artistic Director/Choreographer Amy Seiwert’s Renaissance, celebrating renewal and community, to my Roses for the Last Dance, sharing snapshots of the ways couples fall both in and out of love.
Giselle closes the 26/27 season on Mother’s Day weekend, as we take time to honor the special women helping shape our lives. This enduring classical ballet understands something timeless about us—that even when love falters, forgiveness can redeem, and grace can arrive when it is least expected.
Ballet is an experience of shared presence. Our dancers devote years of training and artistry to the craft of bringing these stories and works to you. And we are grateful that you reciprocate each year by joining us. In a world that rarely slows down, what a gift it is to gather in the quiet of the theater to share the sights, sounds, and experience of art.
Thank you for spending time with us.

With gratitude,
STEPHEN MILLS

One of the most beloved classical ballets ever created, Giselle is a tale of young love, betrayal, and redemption that has captivated audiences for nearly two centuries. Set in the idyllic Rhineland, this Romantic Era masterpiece tells the story of an innocent village girl named Giselle, whose heart is broken when the nobleman she loves is revealed to be engaged to another. Consumed by grief, she dies—and rises again as one of the Wilis, the ghostly spirits of betrayed maidens who “dance men to their doom.” But Giselle’s love endures, and in the moonlit second act, her spirit intervenes to save her beloved from their merciless grasp. With a lush score by Adolphe Adam, evocative choreography rooted in Romantic tradition, and an ethereal corps de ballet of Wilis in flowing white tulle, Giselle is both a visceral emotional journey and a breathtaking spectacle of classical dance that lingers long after the final curtain.
