Pilates for Back Pain & Promoting a Healthy Spine

Disc Injuries, Spinal issues, and alignment problems can affect all areas of life, not to mention pain issues, especially lower back pain. In fact, research shows about 80% of people have complained about having low-back pain at least once in their life.

By focusing on core stabilization and precise, controlled movements, Pilates offers a gentle practice for rehabilitation and restoration. Pilates is one of the best practices for overall health and fitness, but has been shown clinically to significantly reduce the effects of muscular-skeletal back pain. The precise movements and instruction on core engagement help to strengthen the core, including the back, and reduce pain.

The Pilates Back Rehab Package offers ten 30-minute private sessions with one of our certified Pilates instructors.

According to Joseph Pilates, “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”

You will receive individual attention and instruction customized to your physical condition. After 10 sessions you will feel the difference.

COST: $410 for package* of ten ($500 VALUE)

*This packages is an introductory package and may only be purchased one time.

Pink Pilates is a Pilates Mat workout that helps stretch and strengthen the shoulder, chest, back, and abdominal muscles, allowing women to regain and/or maintain a full range of motion to those areas affected by breast cancer and surgery.

The weekly Pilates mat-based classes are held in Ballet Austin’s beautiful center for dance and community wellness, a non-medical, happy, mainstream environment that allows for encouragement and rehabilitation.

Pilates for Better Breathing

While Pilates is predominantly known for core strengthening and flexibility, studies have also indicated that Pilates improves respiratory endurance, lung volumes and, inspiratory and expiratory flow rates.

‘Breath’ is one of the foundation principles in the Pilates method and is known as the ‘engine’ behind Pilates.

At a very basic level we need to breathe to promote the circulation of oxygen around our body and up to our brain to ensure optimal brain and body functions. If our breathing is inadequate, for example if we take lots of short, rapid breaths then we restrict the oxygen and blood supply to the brain, creating stress and panic. this can happen with many respiratory illnesses.

Pilates focusses on 3 key methods during exercise; lateral breathing, set breathing patterns, and active breathing.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Obese individuals: Effectively improve respiratory function & functional capacity.
  • Cystic Fibrosis: Improve respiratory muscle strength.
  • Chronic stroke: Effectively improve cardiopulmonary function.
  • Following cardiac surgery: Significant improvement in vital capacity and ventilation in individuals following cardiac surgery[8].
  • The elderly: Improve pulmonary function and respiratory muscle strength among the elderly.
  • Non-communicable diseases such as cancer, respiratory diseases, COVID-related breathing.

With a private Pilates reformer workout you will receive individual attention and instruction customized to your physical condition. Be sure to talk with the instructor about your pulmonary function.
